Tonali investigation continues

The English Football Association (FA) is conducting further investigations into Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.

These are focused on the midfielder’s current stint on Tyne side following his big-money move from Italian giants, AC Milan.

Whereas previously Tonali has been found guilty of betting on Milan matches while playing for the Rossoneri, the Italian is now being accused of betting on matches during his time at Newcastle.

No details have at this time been released about the validity of these allegations with the investigation still ongoing.

Newcastle United’s stance

In a press conference given by the St. James’ Park outfit, the club’s sporting director, Dan Ashworth gave this statement:

“All I can say to you is that we have fully cooperated with all of the associations and organisations concerned and the FA are, of course, fully aware of what’s going on. All I can deal with is the present and the facts. I can’t look into the future and, as I’ve said, we’ve cooperated fully with all of the organisations.”

Tonali’s suspension

The 23-year-old regista has already admitted to gambling while playing for the red side of Milan.

Having now been found guilty, Tonali has received a 10-month ban from all footballing activities.

Additionally, he has also agreed to an additional eight months of rehabilitation as part of a plea deal.

Initially, the ban was only applied in Italy, imposed by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), however, it has now formally been extended to global effect by the International regulator, FIFA.

Reduced sentence

Since the beginning of the investigation, Tonali has admitted to having a gambling addiction and has confirmed he is seeking therapy to treat this issue.

This has been factored into his suspension, hence the required eight-month rehabilitation requirement.
